Nigeria and Ghana Forge Strategic Alliance to Champion Africa’s Data Privacy Agenda

Dr Vincent Olatunji, received the Executive Director of the Data Protection Commission of Ghana, Dr Arnold Kavaarpuo, on a courtesy visit to the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja.

Dr Olatunji commended Dr Kavaarpuo for his work in advancing data protection and privacy in Ghana. He emphasised the working relationship between the data protection authorities of Nigeria and Ghana. He highlighted some of the global challenges of data protection and privacy, including funding and awareness, and Nigeria’s initiatives aimed at addressing them. He further encouraged Ghana to participate actively in the Network of African Data Protection Authorities (NADPA) and the Global Privacy Assembly (GPA).

Dr Kavaarpuo commended Dr Olatunji for his leadership, not only at the NDPC but also for his contributions at the level of NADPA. He noted that data protection and privacy began a long time ago in Ghana, but there is still much to learn, especially from Nigeria. He stated that Ghana is doing a lot to create awareness about data protection and privacy, build institutions to support it, and improve capacity building to ensure competence.

Ideas were shared on data governance and how best to manage Africa’s peculiarities. Both parties recognised the importance of collaboration and cooperation, and committed to further strengthening their working relationship.
