The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) held the third edition of the Digital Privacy Awareness Campaign (DPAC), a nationwide sensitisation initiative aimed at promoting data protection and privacy awareness within tertiary institutions, at the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT), with about 300 students in attendance.
The event was declared opened by the National Commissioner/CEO of the NDPC, Dr Vincent Olatunji, who was represented by the Head of Research and Development at the NDPC, Dr Tolulope Pius-Fadipe. Dr Pius-Fadipe highlighted the importance of responsible digital engagement and the critical role of academic institutions in fostering a culture of data protection and ethical digital practices.
The Vice-Chancellor of UNIPORT, Professor Owunari Georgewill, delivered the Welcome Remark, while the Director of CITE UNIPORT, Professor Omorogiuwa Eseosa, gave the Keynote Speech at the event, which also featured two Privacy Talks delivered by the CEO of Cyberdeflex, Tosin Emmanuel, who spoke on the topic, “Your Digital Footprint: Understanding and Managing Your Online Identity,” and the Executive Director of DigiCivic Initiative, Mojirayo Ogunlana, who spoke on the topic, “Understanding Your Digital Rights in the Digital World”.
The event also featured a panel discussion themed, “Privacy in the Age of AI, Social Media, and Emerging Technologies”, and was moderated by a Digital Intelligence Analyst, Ezeh Onyedika Joshua. Panellists included the Founder of Web Security Lab, David Odes; a Cybersecurity Analyst, Preye Ikisa; and a Cybersecurity and Digitalisation Consultant for MSMEs, Cynthia Nwobodo.
