Lottery and Bookmakers Associations Seek NDPC Guidance to Comply with Data Protection Act

The National Commissioner/CEO of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), Dr Vincent Olatunji, received delegates from the Association of Nigeria Bookmakers (ANB) and the Nigeria Licensed Lottery Operators Forum (NLLOF), led by NLLOF Chairman, Mr Chima Onwuka, on a courtesy visit to the Commission.

Mr Onwuka explained that the purpose of the visit was to seek guidance, noting that the gaming sector processes a large volume of Nigerians’ personal data. This also follows the public notice requiring organisations from various sectors to demonstrate compliance with the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 (NDP Act). They affirmed their commitment to complying with the NDP Act, recognising that this will help build trust among Nigerian citizens and stakeholders.

The delegates also requested training on data protection and privacy for their members and agents, and proposed an annual engagement with the Commission to help them understand the privacy sector and keep them updated.

In his response, Dr Olatunji commended the delegation for their proactive approach and noted that the Commission views data controllers and processors as partners. He emphasised that the Commission’s aim is not to hinder innovation but to regulate in ways that encourage growth and ease of doing business. Acknowledging the sector’s uniqueness, which requires the processing of the personal data of over 60 million Nigerians every month, Dr Olatunji outlined the benefits of compliance.

He answered questions to clarify data-protection requirements specific to the gaming industry and informed them that sector-specific compliance guidelines are being developed. He assured the delegates that the Commission is ready to work with them and provide training for their members and agents. This collaboration, he said, will help the sector align with recognised data-protection and privacy best practices.
