The National Commissioner and CEO of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), Dr Vincent Olatunji, participated in a one-day public hearing organized by the National Assembly Committees on ICT and Cybersecurity, as well as Digital and Information Technology, to deliberate on the National Digital Economy and E-Governance Bill.
The Bill aims to provide a legal and regulatory framework for electronic communications, digital records, contracts, and signatures in Nigeria, thereby strengthening the foundation for the nation’s digital transformation.
The event, co-chaired by Senator Shuaib Afolabi Salisu and Honourable Adedeji Stanley Olajide, also featured remarks from dignitaries including Senator Oyelola Ashiru, who represented the Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio while the Rt Hon speaker was represented by Honorable Abiodun Akinlade.
In his goodwill message, Dr Olatunji commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s 8-Point Agenda, which recognizes technology as a key driver of national development, as well as the efforts of the Minister of Communications, Dr Bosun Tijani, and the legislative committees. He emphasized that the Bill is for all Nigerians, serving as a foundation for innovation, trust, and inclusive economic growth. Highlighting that the digital economy contributes over 21% to global GDP, he urged Nigeria to remain proactive in this global shift.
He also underscored the need for a sector-driven data retention policy and reaffirmed NDPC’s commitment to supporting the Bill, which he believes will solidify Nigeria’s position in the global digital economy and enhance citizens’ confidence in digital governance.
