Data Protection Critical for Digital Tourism, NDPC Tells Stakeholders at Welcome to Nigeria Expo

The National Commissioner/CEO of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), Dr Vincent Olatunji, was ably represented by the NDPC’s Head of Legal, Enforcement, and Regulations, Barrister Babatunde Bamigboye, at the Welcome to Nigeria Expo 2025, held in Abuja. The Honourable Minister of Arts, Culture, Tourism, and the Creative Economy, Barrister Hannatu Musa Musawa, delivered the keynote address.

Delivering his presentation on data protection in the context of the event theme, “National Agenda for Tourism Partnership on Infrastructural Development, Institutional Linkages, Growth, and Sustainable Development,” Barrister Bamigboye emphasised the need for all citizens to be aware of their rights as data subjects, particularly as Nigeria advances in digital tourism and smart infrastructure.

He stressed that organisations in the tourism and creative sectors must prioritise compliance with the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDP Act), especially in areas such as data collection, storage, and sharing of tourists’ personal information. He noted, during the panel session, that the NDPC continues to drive this agenda by enforcing compliance, issuing fines for data breaches, conducting sector-specific training, and promoting collaborative partnerships.

Barrister Bamigboye also stressed the importance of embedding privacy by design into digital tourism platforms, using secure digital infrastructure, and maintaining transparency in how data is managed. He reiterated the Commission’s commitment to fostering a data privacy culture that not only protects citizens, but also enhances Nigeria’s credibility as a safe and responsible destination for tourism and investment.
