Data as the Cornerstone: Dr. Olatunji Highlights Nigeria’s Digital Economy Strides at Global Summit

The National Commissioner/CEO of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), Dr Vincent Olatunji, attended a high-level session titled, “Navigating the Digital Frontier: Data Privacy and AI Governance in Africa,” on the second day of the ongoing International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP) Global Summit 2026 in Washington, D.C.

During the session, which featured a distinguished assembly of seasoned privacy experts and Data Protection Commissioners from Africa, discussions focused on economic strategy, regulatory evolution, enforcement realities and regional harmony. Dr Olatunji underscored Nigeria’s steadfast commitment to advancing data privacy as a cornerstone of the digital economy. He provided key insights into Nigeria’s domestic progress and offered strategic recommendations aimed at strengthening Africa’s collective digital presence on the global stage.

Dr Olatunji also led a delegation to a meeting with the CEO of the Future of Privacy Forum (FPF), Jules Polonetsky, and his team. As a leading global non-profit, the FPF is dedicated to privacy leadership and advancing principled data practices for emerging technologies. This engagement served as a strategic follow-up to the Building International Data Protection Capacity (BIDPC) workshop held in Abuja in January 2026, in collaboration with the U.S. Department of State.

At the meeting, Dr Olatunji shared insights into Nigeria’s rapidly evolving data privacy ecosystem. Discussions focused on strategic projections for strengthening public awareness, expanding capacity building, and deploying technology to enhance compliance and enforcement.

The FPF reiterated its commitment to supporting the Commission’s initiatives through a series of collaborative engagements and technical exchanges moving forward.
