The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) participated in the Global Cross Border Privacy Rules (CBPR) Workshop held at the Village Hotel, Sentosa, Singapore from the 26th to 28th of May, 2025. The event brought together data protection regulators, government officials, private technology companies, and industry leaders globally.
The two-day workshop, organised by Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA), featured presentations, panel discussions, fireside chats, and tabletop discussions. It culminated in a high-level government-only meeting between regulator representatives and the Board of the Global CBPR Forum. The Commission was represented by Ibukunoluwa Owa from the Legal, Enforcement and Regulations Department, and Fatima Sanni from the Strategy, Partnerships & Communications Department.
Ms Owa participated in a panel discussion titled, “From Law to Practice: Mapping Data Protection Regimes with Global CBPR.” She discussed Nigeria’s journey – from its initial interest in the CBPR to its strategic decision to become an associate member, focusing on the mapping process undertaken with the Centre for Information Policy Leadership (CIPL). The process with CIPL involved a thorough review of the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDP Act) against the Global CBPR framework to ascertain its alignment for enforceability.
Others panelists at the session included representatives from Brazil, Thailand, Qatar, and India.
